Over 125 events for bumper Norwich Science Festival

From the science of gin through to the scientific secrets of Doctor Who, there is something for everyone in this year’s Norwich Science Festival, which returns 21-29 October during half term.

The bumper brochure, featuring over 125 events, has just been released, and includes nine days of celebrity talks, inspirational shows and exhibitions, hands-on family fun, cutting-edge research, and science activities for all ages and all levels of knowledge.

Tickets are now on sale, via norwichsciencefestival.co.uk, for headline talks including Helen Sharman – Britain’s First Astronaut, shows from TV/radio scientists and celebrities Ben Garrod, Mark Thompson, Adam Rutherford, Lizzie Daly, Nicholas Crane and Johnny Ball.

If you like your science with a dose of laughter, or a laid-back science talk with added beer, there are plenty of ‘After Hours’ events to choose from, including shows from Pint of Science, a look at the science behind the movies, and an X-Rated Science event which is strictly adults only! Other quirky events include The Scientific Secrets of Doctor Who, which explores the huge range of concepts covered in the show from black holes to artificial intelligence, and a talk on time machines.

There are also plenty of free, hands-on family activities during the Festival, with special themed days at The Forum, kicking off with a look at stars and space in Astronomy Day on 21 October, plus other days dedicated to physics, engineering and maths, chemistry, biology, nature and the environment, and food and agriculture.

The Festival features inspiring talks on world-leading research and discoveries, including two days of how local researchers from Norwich Research Park are ‘Solving Problems with Science’.

You can also take a look at ‘everyday science’, with talks on the science behind gin, beer and macaron making, and the ‘science of eating’ – how our environment shapes our senses and experience of food.

Natalie Bailey, Norwich Science Festival Producer, said: “We’re hugely excited about this year’s Festival, and have a fantastic range of events and activities for all ages, whether it’s messy, hands-on science fun for young ones, talks on birds, bees, otters and spiders, or serious discussions on the future of robots.”

Norwich Science Festival is co-ordinated by The Forum, with headline sponsorship from Anglian Water, and takes place in multiple venues across Norwich.

The brochure is available from The Forum and at venues around Norfolk, and online at norwichsciencefestival.co.uk.
