Womans Hour Craft Prize exhibition comes to Norwich

    Press release - 25 Jan 2018

The Forum, Norwich is to host a prestigious exhibition celebrating the work of some of the most innovative and exciting craft makers in the UK.

Works from the BBC Radio 4’s inaugural Woman’s Hour Craft Prize finalists will be on display in the Gallery at The Forum, Norwich from 12 March – 7 April 2018.

Organised by BBC Radio 4, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) and the Crafts Council the exhibition coincides with the 70th anniversary of Woman’s Hour. The Forum is the first venue to receive the exhibition following its run at the V&A in London.

The exhibition will form a central part of The Forum’s Makers’ Month. Running from 12 March – 7 April Makers’ Month offers creative activities, hands-on workshops to help people learn how to knit, spin, weave, sew, crochet, sketch, paint and many other craft skills.

The exhibition features the work of winner Phoebe Cummings and 11 finalists. Works on display range from huge handwoven willow structures, ceramics, furniture, jewellery made with 18th century pins to bespoke bicycles and darned high street hoodies.

The exhibition also includes works from finalists Laura Ellen Bacon, Alison Britton, Neil Brownsword, Lin Cheung, Caren Hartley, Peter Marigold, Celia Pym, Romilly Saumarez-Smith, Andrea Walsh, Emma Woffended and Laura Youngson Coll.

Commenting Jayne Evans, Events and Partnerships Manager at The Forum and organiser of Makers’ Month said: “We are thrilled to welcome this wonderful exhibition to Norwich and it certainly is a fitting centrepiece to Makers’ Month 2018. These craft makers are amongst the best in the UK and I hope these works will inspire and inform visitors.”

    About the winner:

Phoebe Cummings uses unfired clay to create temporary sculptures and installations that gradually disintegrate, challenging expectations of what craft is. Intricate and detailed, her work responds to the natural world and lasts only for the duration of an exhibition after which the clay is, where possible, reclaimed and reused on future pieces. For the Craft Prize she created a fountain that dissolves as the water flows.
