Record Numbers for Ice Rink

The EDF Energy Ice Rink at The Forum attracted over 35,000 skaters during its 8 ½ week opening period, proving even more popular than last year. 5,000 more people took to the ice this winter, that is a 16.6% increase on the same period last year. Children from 56 schools in the region enjoyed the ice skating experience as a special end of term treat and many more came with friends and family during the holidays. During the busiest week just before Christmas 7,000 people got their skates on.

In spite of the increase in numbers of skaters, there were far fewer injuries and accidents. Only 29 people were sent to hospital by the paramedics this year, almost half as many as last year’s total of 57. “We are pleased to see such a significant reduction in the number of injuries.” Said Forum Trust Marketing Manager Mark Hand. “Improved maintenance of the surface of the ice, together with recorded health and safety instructions in the changing area and assistance from the stewards on the ice, has helped enormously. It is also possible that the people of Norfolk have improved their skating skills after two years of having the rink here.” He added.

There has been some very positive feedback about the EDF Energy Ice Rink from skaters, spectators and visitors to The Forum. Most people felt that the rink was a wonderful seasonal centrepiece for Norwich, it looked particularly Christmassy at night with all the lights and trees surrounding it. 98% of skaters who completed a questionnaire about the skating experience enjoyed themselves so much that they would recommend the rink to friends and family.

Robin Hall, Chief Executive of The Forum Trust, which manages The Forum and Origins Visitor Attraction, said. “The Forum Trust is grateful to all of the organisations who have worked with us to bring an ice rink to Norwich for a second year, in particular the principal sponsor EDF Energy. It is heartening to see and hear so many local people enjoying this wonderful winter activity once again.”
