2nd Air Division Memorial Library The 2nd Air Division Memorial Library is a unique “living memorial” to nearly 7000 American airmen who were killed while stationed in East Anglia during World War Two. The library is not only a memorial but serves as an educational and friendship bridge between two nations.
The Library contains over 4000 non-fiction books covering all aspects of American life and culture, a quarter of which are related to World War Two. The stock is constantly updated to reflect current informational and recreational needs. The Library supports local schools by providing American content related to the national curriculum.
The aim of the Memorial Library is to provide books about the United States and its culture, or books contributing to knowledge in general, written by Americans or published in the United States, for the use of the general reader. One emphasis is on books and information to travellers planning to visit the USA.
Another important function of the Library is to document the history of the 2nd Air Division while based in East Anglia during the Second World War and the aim is to make the collection as complete as possible.
Besides a permanent librarian and support staff, a unique arrangement between the 2nd Air Division Association and the Fulbright Program ensures that the Library has a continuing “American presence” with a new American librarian arriving every year, providing expertise and knowledge about America and promoting the Library as a resource.
